John C. Martin (Illinois Congressman)

John Cunningham Martin ( born April 29, 1880 in Salem, Illinois, † January 27, 1952 in Long Beach, California ) was an American politician. Between 1939 and 1941 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Martin attended the public schools of his home and then the Illinois College at Jacksonville. Since 1907 he worked in the banking industry. Between 1922 and 1932 he was a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. Between 1933 and 1952, including during his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, he served as president of the Salem National Bank. In the years 1933 to 1935 and again from 1937 to 1939 he was Minister of Finance ( Treasurer ) of Illinois. Martin was in 1936 and 1937, Chairman of the Tax Commission of the State of. He was also from 1935 to 1938 chairman of the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1938, Martin was in the 26th Election District of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Edwin V. Champion on January 3, 1939. Since he resigned in 1940 to run again, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until January 3, 1941. During this time, the last New Deal legislation of the Federal Government there were passed under President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Martin continued to work in the banking industry. He died on January 27, 1952 in Long Beach and was buried in Salem.
