John C. Portman, Jr.

John C. Portman, Jr. ( born December 4, 1924 in Walhalla, Oconee County, State of South Carolina ) is an American architect and real estate developer. He was known primarily for the building type he invented the multi-storey atrium hotel.

Life

Portman graduated in 1950 training at the Georgia Institute of Technology from. In 1953 he founded the architectural firm in Atlanta, John Portman & Associates.

The Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Los Angeles and the Renaissance Center in Detroit are two of the early buildings in which Portman applied the atrium design; these hotels made ​​him widely known. This is part of the hotel chain Marriott Renaissance Center was the time of its opening in 1977 of the world's tallest hotel building, its central tower is since 1986 at least still one of the tallest hotel buildings in the western world.
