The John C. Stennis Space Center (SSC ) is the largest facility for testing of rocket motors, which operates NASA. It is located in Hancock County (Mississippi ) on the border between the U.S. states of Mississippi and Louisiana.

History

The construction work on the 55 km ² area began in October 1961. Here the rocket engines for the Apollo program were tested. Since 1975, we focused on the engines for the Space Shuttle, and in the 1990s, eventually they turned to experimental drive types. The hybrid drive of SpaceShipOne was tested, for example here.

The facility was renamed several times in its short history. From the Mississippi Test Facility (1965 ), the National Space Technology Laboratories (1974). 1988 was the center its present name in honor of the longtime Senator from Mississippi, John C. Stennis, who always supported the U.S. space program.
