John Canton ( born July 31, 1718, Stroud, Gloucestershire, † March 22, 1772 in London) was an English physicist.

Life

Canton in 1738 teacher and taught from 1742 at a private school in London. He invented, among other things, an electroscope and determined the accumulated electric charge in Leyden jars. 1750 succeeded in manufacturing artificial permanent magnets without having to use naturally occurring magnetic materials for it.

In 1762 he proved that water is actually compressible. In his 1753 published work Electrical experiments: with to attempt to account for several phenomena Their he reported at the same time with Benjamin Franklin from the fact that the electric charge of some clouds positive, other negative behavior. He gained the Canton'schen light stones, also Cantons phosphorus, from CaS, the afterglow in the dark after they were previously irradiated by sunlight awareness.

Awards

In 1751 he was awarded the Copley Medal.
