John Carpenter (athlete)

John Carpenter ( John Carpenter Condict, born December 7, 1884 in Washington, DC; † June 4, 1933 in Chicago) was an American sprinter.

At the Olympic Games in London in 1908, he came in the finals of the 400-meter run as the finish line first, but was disqualified because he had pushed down the stretch the British Wyndham neck shaft (which is permitted under U.S. rules, in accordance with the relevant British rules, however, was not permitted).

The judges sat two days later at a repetition races with marked lanes, which stayed away from the other two U.S. athletes William Robbins and John Taylor in solidarity with Carpenter. Neck shaft was the only participant of this run to a noncombat victory.

John Carpenter was a graduate of Cornell University.
