John Cassin

John Cassin ( born September 6, 1813 Chester County, Pennsylvania, † January 10, 1869 in Philadelphia ) was an American ornithologist.

Life

He is counted among the greatest American ornithologist, describing 198 birds that were not even mentioned earlier by Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon. In 1834 he was resident of Philadelphia and devoted, after he had worked for some years as a merchant and official duties had performed the rest of his life to the study of ornithology.

Already in 1853 he will of Carl Friedrich Ludwig Hartlaub ( 1793-1879 ) proposed as an honorary member of the German Ornithological Society, and finally selected.
