John Compton

Sir John George Melvin Compton ( born April 26, 1925 on Canouan, St. Vincent and the Grenadines; † September 7, 2007 in Castries, St. Lucia), KBE PC, was three times Prime Minister of St. Lucia.

He held that post 1964-1979 and between 1982 and 1996 from. Until his death, he was prime minister again since December 2006. In his first term, the island nation gained independence from the United Kingdom. Between 1964 and 1996 he led also founded by him United Workers Party ( UWP ). He was re-elected as party leader in 2005. In the parliamentary elections on December 11, 2006, the UWP surprisingly won 11 of 17 seats in the House of Representatives of St. Lucia. Compton was then sworn in as Prime Minister on 15 December 2006. In his final term Compton planned in particular the improvement of internal security and investment in education.
