John Connelly (footballer)

John Michael Connelly ( born July 18, 1938 in St Helens, England; † October 25, 2012 ) was an English footballer. He arrived in time 1959-1966 to 20 appearances for the English national football team, it fired seven goals and was part of the team that in their own country won the world championship in 1966.

Sports career

Following his adolescence in the domestic club St Theresa 's School Old Boys and St Helens Town to Connelly graduated at the age of 18 years at the then first division outfit Burnley. There he developed into a fast and prolific winger and won in 1960 with Burnley English Championship, in their decisive phase, however, he was injured. During the 1959/60 season he made his debut also in the England team when the team played 1:1 against Wales in Cardiff. Previously Connelly came in a game of U23 youth team to use.

After another runner-up and third place Connelly moved to 105 goals in 265 games in April 1964 for a transfer fee of 56,250 pounds to Manchester United. In his first season he won with Manchester United the championship and contributed 15 goals even help. His last game for the national team, he completed then at the opening match of England the 1966 World Cup, when the team played against Uruguay 0-0.

After a total of two seasons at Manchester itself Connelly Blackburn Rovers joined after they were relegated just as Table from the First Division. There he was in his first season again the top scorer of the club, but could ascend neither in this nor in the other three years with Blackburn. He then moved in 1970 to the third tier, for Bury FC, where he descended into the fourth league and remained there until his career end in 1973 after a total of 181 goals in 572 games.
