John Cooper (car maker)

John Cooper CBE ( born July 17, 1923 in Kingston upon Thames, Surrey; † 24 December 2000) was a British automobile designer and post-war racing driver, who also built successful racing cars.

In 1946 he founded together with his father Charles Cooper Car Company, which developed soon into a successful Formula 3 and Formula 2 racing car producer.

Some years later, his greatest influence was on the Formula 1 the design of the mid-engine car, where the engine was not as was customary placed in front of the driver but behind him. The first races all over the Cooper in the season 1958 in the years 1959 and 1960 was Jack Brabham at Cooper even world champions.

By the end of the 1960s drove the cars of John Cooper Formula 1 races, the most famous Cooper - pilot next to Jack Brabham included Stirling Moss, Bruce McLaren and Jochen Rindt. 1965 John Cooper sold its Formula 1 team.

But John Cooper was not just built Formula 1 cars, as successful he was with the tuning of the Mini, which was successful in the 1960s as a Mini Cooper in rallies and became a cult car.

John Cooper died in 2000 age of 77 from cancer.
