John D. Barrow

John David Barrow ( born November 29, 1952 in London) is a theoretical physicist and professor of applied mathematics and theoretical physics at Cambridge University.

Life and work

Barrow studied mathematics from 1971 to 1974 at the University of Durham and then astrophysics at Oxford University, where he earned his doctorate under Dennis Sciama 1977. 1977 to 1980 he was a Research Lecturer at Christ Church College and in the Department of Astrophysics at Oxford. After that he was Miller Fellow at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1981 he went to the University of Sussex, where he remained until he moved to Cambridge in 1999. He is also Director of the Millennium Mathematics Project.

In addition to more than 300 scientific publications, he is also the author of numerous popular books whose first The Left Hand of Creation In 1983. In 1988 he founded together with Frank Tipler, a version of the anthropic principle in the controversial book The Anthropic Cosmological Principle.

2006 Barrow received the Templeton Prize.

His play Infinities, which had premiere in Milan in 2002, won the Italian theater price.
