John Dauth

John Dauth AO LVO ( born 1947 ) is an Australian diplomat. Since September 2008 he has been the Australian High Commissioner in the UK.

Dauth studied at the University of Sydney, where he received a Bachelor of Arts in 1969. In 1969 he was active in the Australian foreign ministry. His first post led him to Nigeria, where he and later was second only 1970-1972 Third Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Lagos. From 1974 to 1976 he was First Secretary at the Australian Embassy in Islamabad. Dauth is relocated temporarily from 1977 to 1980 in Buckingham Palace, to work as an Assistant Press Secretary to the Queen and Press Secretary to the Prince of Wales. For his services Dauth was appointed in 1980 to the Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order. After his return he was following from 1980 to 1982 Head of the Commonwealth and Multilateral Organisations Section of the Australian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Canberra. During his diplomatic career further Dauth served from 1983 to 1985 as chargé at the Australian embassy in Tehran and was from 1986 to 1987 at the Australian Consul General Consulate General in Noumea, the capital of the French overseas territory New Caledonia. After he was declared by the French Government persona non grata because of proximity to the Kanak independence movement he was accused, Dauth New Caledonia had to leave.

Back in Australia, he held several posts now in the State Department. He was from 1987 to 1989 Assistant Secretary in the Department of Public Relations, was thereafter from 1989 to 1991 Chief of Staff of the Foreign Minister Gareth Evans and then worked from 1991 to 1993 as First Assistant Secretary in the International Security Division. From 1996 to 1998, Dauth First Assistant Secretary of the South and South- East Asia Division. Between 1993 and 1996 he was High Commissioner in Malaysia.

Was Dauth Permanent Representative of Australia to the United Nations in New York City in 2001. A post he held until 2006 when he became the new High Commissioner in New Zealand. In 2008 he moved to the post of High Commissioner in the UK, sparking Richard Alston from.
