John Davis (sealer)

John Davis ( * 1784 in Surrey ) was a native of England American sealers. He is considered a master of the ship, the first people landed to on the Antarctic continent.

Life

Davis, who had joined as a 16- year-old British merchant marine, went in search of new hunting grounds for the seal hunt a total of seven times in Antarctic waters. On 7 February 1821 he wants the process, some of his men have sent a boat ashore shortly after the first sightings of the continent by Fabian von Bellingshausen, Mikhail Petrovich Lazarev, Edward Bransfield and Nathaniel Palmer to keep Robben out. These men could be the been the first to have entered the newly discovered continent. However, modern historians doubt his information.

According to Davis, the Davissee, a marginal sea of the Southern Ocean, and the 74 km long coast Davis are named in Graham Land.
