John Degenkolb ( born January 7, 1989 in Gera ) is a German racing cyclist.

Degenkolb grew up in White Castle in Bavaria and went to school. He lives in Frankfurt am Main.

Sports career

John Degenkolb was already as a young rider with great success. He stood from 2005 to 2007 in his age group at the end of the year in the official rankings of the BDR each topped. In 2006 he won the overall title of the Junior League. He won in these age classes several German championships on the track and in the time trial. In 2007 he became junior vice champion in the time trial.

In 2008, he joined the Thüringer Energie Team, which has the status as a Continental team, and ran until 2010 for this team mainly U23 race. In this age group, he won the 2008 Rating wheel - Bundesliga, in 2010 German champion on the road, and 2010 Vice World Champion in the road race.

In 2011 he moved to the U.S. UCI ProTeam HTC -Highroad. In his first year in the premier league of cycling he could bring in a total of seven victories, including two stages of the Critérium du Dauphiné and the one-day race round win financial center Eschborn -Frankfurt.

As the Team HTC -Highroad disbanded the end of 2011, John Degenkolb moved in 2012 to the Professional Continental Team Argos - Shimano. There he achieved, inter alia, a fifth place at Milan - Sanremo and fourth places at the Road World Championships as well as at Paris- Tours. He won a total of twelve international cycling races, including but not limited He won on his second Grand Tour participation, the Vuelta a España in 2012, five stages, which no German was succeeded before him. Degenkolb won the overall individual classification of the UCI Europe Tour in 2012.

In May 2013, followed by the first stage win at the next big tour, the Giro d' Italia. In August 2013 John Degenkolb won the sprint his first UCI World Tour - day races, the Vattenfall cyclassics, and win in October, also in the sprint with his first Paris-Tours cycling classic.

In March 2014 Degenkolb won the Belgian spring classic Gent- Wevelgem. He was the first German since Marcus Burghardt in 2007, who won the race for themselves.
