John Donnelly Fage

John Donnelly Fage ( born June 3, 1921 in Teddington, Middlesex, now part of the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, England; † August 6, 2002 in Machynlleth, Powys County, Wales, United Kingdom ) was a British historian with a focus on history Africa.

Life

Fage put at Magdalene College, University of Cambridge from all examinations passed and submitted to a doctorate there in 1949 work The Achievement of Self -Government in Southern Rhodesia 1898-1923. Then he went to the later University of Ghana in Accra said means at the then Gold Coast. This was especially connected with the University of London. He taught there for ten years until 1959 and dealt particularly with the Atlantic slave trade.

Fage taught from 1959 to 1963 at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London. From 1963 to 1984 he taught and conducted research at the University of Birmingham and set up the Centre of West African Studies ( CWAS ) a. In many years of collaboration with Roland Anthony Oliver he gave at the Cambridge University Press 1975-1986 out the eight-volume Cambridge History of Africa, having already the Short History of Africa by Penguin Books in 1962 published a great success had been the two researchers in several editions and was launched in twelve languages. Fage and Oliver together founded the journal The Journal of African History.
