John E. Davis (North Dakota politician)

John Edward Davis ( born April 18, 1913 in Goodrich, Sheridan County, North Dakota; † 12 May 1990 in Rancho Mirage, California ) was an American politician and the 25th Governor of the State of North Dakota.

Life

After attending a few years out of high school in Fargo, Davis was the final examination in 1931 at the Bismarck High School. Later, in the fall, Davis reported to the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. During his time at the University he was candidate of the fraternity Beta Theta Pi ( ΒΘΠ ) and was in the Reserve Officer Training Corps ( ROTC ), a training program for soldiers, active. He was the highest ranking officer in Scabbard and Blade, an organization selected ROTC officers. In 1935, he joined the University as a Bachelor degree in Business Studies.

Davis returned to Goodrich and led the good and the family farm. In May 1941, he was drafted by the U.S. Army. He was Snelling and then sent first to Fort to Camp Robinson in Arkansas, where he was commander of Company C, 134th Infantry, First Battalion. He witnessed many battles across Europe and received the awards Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Silver Star. He left on 31 July 1945 by the Army and from the camp McCoy in Wisconsin.

Policy

In 1946, Davis was elected mayor of McClusky, North Dakota and served until 1952. This year he tried successfully for a seat in the Senate of North Dakota. There he remained until 1956, when he was the Republican candidate for election as Governor. He defeated the Democrat Wally Warner in the fall election. In 1958 he was re-elected again and served until 1960. In 1960, Davis was a candidate for the United States Senate, but was defeated by Quentin N. Burdick. He was again a candidate for the Republican nomination in 1964, but lost to Thomas S. Kleppe. 1966 Davis was with the Sioux Award, the highest honor of the former students of the University of North Dakota, excellent.

Davis was from 1967 to 1968, the national commander of the American Legion and was appointed in 1969 by President Richard Nixon as director of the civil defense authority. In 1972, this authority was renamed defense and civil preparedness agency. Following his retirement in 1976 his Department of Defense Service Medal was awarded.

1977 Davis returned back to North Dakota to run the ranch and his family to join the board of the First National Bank of McClusky. In 1978, Davis received the Greater North Dakota Award from the Greater North Dakota Association. He was active in many organizations, such as The Elks, The Masons, The Scottish Rite and The Shrine.

John Davis married Pauline Huntley in 1938 The couple had three children:. John Jr., Richard, and Kathleen. In 1978, the couple retired after 40 years of living together. Two years later married Marilyn R. Davis Westlie. John E. Davis died on 12 May 1990 in Rancho Mirage, California.
