John E. Hines

John Elbridge Hines (* October 3, 1910, † 19 July 1997) was an American theologian and Anglican clergyman. From 1955 to 1964 he was bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and then from 1965 to 1974 Presiding Bishop and Primate of the Episcopal Church thus the United States of America.

Life

Hines grew up in Seneca, South Carolina. He was married to Helen Hines († 1996). The couple had four sons and a daughter.

Education and work

Hines studied at the University of the South and graduated at the Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1945 he was ordained by Henry St. George Tucker and Clinton Simon Quin and Karl Morgan Block bishop. He worked until 1955 as a coadjutor in the Diocese of Texas.
