John Edward Jones (governor)

John E. Jones ( born December 5, 1840 in Montgomeryshire, Wales, † April 10, 1896 in San Francisco, California ) was an American politician and Governor of the State of Nevada.

Early years

John Jones attended the public schools of his home. After the emigration of his family to the United States he studied until 1865 at Iowa State University. He then worked for a time as a teacher and in mining. Then Jones came as workers of the Union Pacific Railroad westward and settled in 1869 in Eureka. He worked there until 1883 as a miner and in agriculture. He was also involved in the formation of the militia in 1876.

Political career

In 1883 he was hired in the Federal Financial Management in Nevada as deputy internal revenue collector. Then he was elected twice to the Surveyor General of Nevada. ( This post was then still military importance and could be interpreted as roughly a commander of the volunteer army. ) Jones held that post from 1886 to 1894.

1895 Jones was elected as a member of the Silver Party for Governor of Nevada. This office he stepped on 7 January 1895. During his tenure, irrigation programs for agriculture in Nevada were created. In Reno, the first public library in the state was created. In the autumn of 1895 cancer was found in Governor Jones. Then he went to recovery to San Francisco, where he succumbed to his illness in April 1896. With his wife Elizabeth Weyburn Governor Jones had two children.
