John Edwin Sandys

Sir John Edwin Sandys [ sændz ] ( born May 19, 1844 in Leicester, † July 6, 1922 in Cambridge ) was a classical scholar.

Life

His parents were Timothy Sandys, Reverend of the Church Missionary Society ( CMS), and Rebecca Swain born. He lived initially in India, returned at the age of 11 years returned to England, where he subsequently attended the Repton School, the Church Missionary Society School in Islington. In 1863 he got a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge.

In 1867 he was elected a Fellow of his college, got a teaching and later became tutor. In 1876 he was elected public orator, a title which was founded in 1919, converted at his retirement in orator emeritus.

He was made an honorary Doctor of the University of Dublin (1892 ), the University of Edinburgh ( 1909), the University of Athens (1912 ) and the University of Oxford ( 1920). He was a fellow of the British Academy in 1909 and was Commander of the Greek Order of the Redeemer (Greek Τάγμα του Σωτήρος ), the highest award of the Greek government. In 1911 he was elevated to knighthood.

He wrote a number of books on Greek oratory, a book about his travels in Greece, and is best known for his History of Classical Scholarship.

In 1880 he married Mary Grainger, daughter of the Vicar of St Paul 's Church in Cambridge. The marriage remained childless.
