John Evans (Australian politician)

John William Evans CMG ( born December 1, 1855 in Liverpool, England; † October 2, 1943 in Hobart, Tasmania ) was an Australian politician and from 1904 to 1909 Premier of Tasmania.

Evans was born in 1855 in Liverpool, England. 1859 settled on the family to Battery Point, Hobart. 1873 Evans hired on Helen, a barque whose co-owner was his father, which mainly trade routes to China and Japan drove on. He later served as second mate on the Wynaud and Harriet McGregor. 1882 wrecked which exploiting dividend under his command Tasman. On 20 October 1883 he married Emily Mary Harcourt († 1941), daughter of the former mayor of Hobart James Harcourt. After 1886 came the loss of a second vessel to Evans retired from seafaring and was working together with his father in the hardware store.

1897 Evans was first elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly, whose member he remained until 1937. On 12 July 1904 he was appointed Premier of Tasmania. He held until June 19, 1909 this office.
