John Forbes Royle

John Forbes Royle ( born May 20, 1798 in Kanpur, India, † January 2, 1858 in Acton, Middlesex ) was an English botanist and physician. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Royle ".

Life

Royle joined as a resident of the British East India Company. He studied botany and geology. From 1823 to 1832 he was head of the botanical garden of Saharanpur. From 1837 to 1856 he held a professorship at King's College London. At the Great Exhibition of 1851, he headed the Indian representation. His main work is the resultant of 1833 to 1840 Illustrations of the Botany and other branches of Natural History of the Himalayan Mountains. The plant genus Roylea is named after him.

His son Peter Royle was a noted physician.
