John Frederick, Count Palatine of Sulzbach-Hilpoltstein

Johann Friedrich von Pfalz- Neuburg ( born August 23, 1587 in Neuburg an der Donau, † October 19, 1644 in Hilpoltstein ) was Count Palatine and Duke of Palatinate - Hilpoltstein from the Wittelsbach branch line of Pfalz-Neuburg.

Life

Johann Friedrich was the youngest son of the Duke Philipp Ludwig von Pfalz- Neuburg (1547-1614) from his marriage to Anna (1552-1632), daughter of Duke Wilhelm V of Jülich -Cleves -Berg. After the death of his father in 1614 him his eldest brother Wolfgang Wilhelm Hilpoltstein, Heideck and Allersberg had left as payment in kind. His other brother August was Sulzbach. The sovereignty remained, however, the prince Neuburger reserved. This resulted in all parts of the country, under strong protest of John Frederick, the Counter-Reformation. Johann Friedrich remained, like his brother August, Lutheran and received by Wolfgang Wilhelm the right to a house church service guaranteed.

Johann Friedrich resided since 1619 in Hilpoltstein and married in 1624 in Darmstadt Sophie Agnes ( 1604-1664 ), daughter of Count Louis V of Hesse-Darmstadt. None of his eight children were older than three years. Without an heir, he died in 1644 and Hilpoltstein fell back to Pfalz- Neuburg. Buried is Johann Friedrich in the parish church of St. Martin in Lauingen on the Danube.
