John Frith

John Frith (* 1503 in Westerham, Kent; † July 4, 1533 in London ) was an English martyr of the Reformation.

He was at Eton and at King's College in Cambridge to 1525 student. After graduation, he was appointed canon of the Christian Church ( Wolsey 's College ), where he met Protestant minded students. Among them was the future priest and scholar William Tyndale.

1527/28 he was set with numerous others on suspicion of heresy. Some of his fellow prisoners recanted, he managed to flee to the Netherlands and subsequently to Marburg. In 1530 he published the Patrick 's Places and has authored numerous own propagandistic writings of the Reformation. In 1532 he stayed for a short time in England, but soon returned to Flanders. After his marriage and again return to England he was burned in 1533 in Smithfield / London as a heretic.
