John Galt (novelist)

John Galt ( born May 2, 1779 Irvine, † April 11, 1839 in Greenock ) was a Scottish writer.

Galt's father was a Navy captain. The family moved to Greenock in 1789, where he wrote his first essays for local magazines. 1804 Galt moved to London, where he studied from 1809 Jura. He traveled widely and became friends with George Byron. 1824 to 1829 he lived in Canada, where he founded the Canada Company. After a dispute with Governor Peregrine Maitland however, he was arrested and in 1833 moved to Greenock, where he died in 1839.
