John George I, Prince of Anhalt-Dessau
Johann Georg I, Prince of Anhalt- Dessau ( born May 9, 1567 Harzgerode, † May 24 1618 in Dessau ) from the house of Ascanians was reigning prince of Anhalt- Dessau.
Life
Prince Johann Georg I was the son of Prince Joachim Ernst von Anhalt and his first wife Agnes of Barby. The princes of Christian I., August, and Rudolf Ludwig I were his brothers or half - brothers.
On February 22, 1588 he married Prince Johann Georg I. Dorothea von Mansfeld. But already in the fifth year of their marriage his wife died. After compliance with the obligatory year of mourning married Prince Johann Georg I. on August 31, 1595 Dorothea von Pfalz- simmering. From this second marriage the children of Johann Kasimir von Anhalt- Dessau and Cunegonde Juliane von Anhalt- Dessau came.
Until 1606 reigned Prince Johann Georg I also on behalf of his younger brothers. By sharing agreement, which was ratified in the same year, he received the Dessauer share, and the Presbytery. As reigning monarch he led the Reformation further inasmuch as he vigorously pursued the abolition of traditional customs and ceremonies.
He founded on August 24, 1617 with the Fruitful Society. From his brother, Prince Ludwig I of Anhalt- Köthen him the company name of Fragrant and fresh with the slogan was intended for mixed. As an emblem him a ausgeblühete Maiblume (Convallaria majalis L.) was awarded. In Köthener society book the entry of Prince Johann Georg I find under No. 9, where also the rhyme Act is recorded, with whom he thanked for recording:
Prince Johann Georg I was well-read in many fields, but especially in astrology and alchemy. He possessed a remarkable library with over 3000 volumes.
At the age of 51 years Prince Johann Georg I. died on 24 May 1618 in Dessau. His successor was John Casimir of Anhalt- Dessau.
