John George, Prince of Hohenzollern-Hechingen

Johann Georg of Hohenzollern- Hechingen (* 1577 in Hechingen, † September 28, 1623 ibid ) was the first Prince of Hohenzollern - Hechingen.

Life

Johann Georg was the only surviving son of Count Eitel Friedrich of Hohenzollern- Hechingen I. (1545-1605) from his second marriage with Sibyl (1558-1599), daughter of Count Froben Christoph von rooms. Johann Georg grew up with his Brandenburg relatives at the court of Berlin.

He married on October 11, 1598 in Hechingen Franziska († 1619), daughter of Count Frederick I of Salm, Wildlife and Rheingraf in Neufville. Johann Georg was a Catholic faithful to the Emperor's side and held from 1603 to 1605 the office of the Imperial Chamber President and later the Office of the President Reichshofrat. The latter feature proved helpful after he had unjustifiably enter the territory of Württemberg at a military conflict with Georg Dietrich von Westerstetten. He represented to the imperial days the Austrian house and tried together with Johannes Pistorius Margrave Georg Friedrich of Baden recover for the Catholic Church. 1609 Johann Georg was special envoy of the Emperor of the French court, on his way back he met in Brussels with Archduke Albrecht, with whom he remained in close epistolary contact. Because of its low content and clashes with Cardinal Khlesl handed Johann Georg 1612/13 three times in his resignation, which, however, was not met. In 1614 he was sent again in successful mission as an envoy to France.

Since 1620 Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece, Johann Georg was raised on March 23, 1623 by Emperor Ferdinand II in the Imperial Prince. Johann Georg's reign was ennobled and thus elevated to Allodium. Unlike a fief meant free ownership of a county of a prince independence from the emperor and empire. The survey was conducted jointly with 22 other imperial counts, including the earls of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen and Hohenzollern - Haigerloch. Ferdinand tried by the elevation of the Catholic Count of Hohenzollern, the balance between Catholics and Protestants in the kingdom to be restored.
