John Gilmore (musician)

John Gilmore ( born September 28, 1931 in Summit, Mississippi; † August 19, 1995 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American jazz saxophonist and clarinetist.

Gilmore began at the age of fourteen years, with the clarinet, studied at the you Sable High School and went on from 1948 to 1951 as a clarinetist and saxophonist during his service in the U.S. Air Force. In 1952 he worked with Earl Hines before he became in 1953 a member of the Quartet and later of the Sun Ra Arkestra from which he four decades until his death in 1993 belonged and which he afterwards until his own death.

In addition, he has also performed with musicians such as Dinah Washington, Clifford Jordan, Freddie Hubbard, Elmo Hope, McCoy Tyner, Paul Bley, Andrew Hill, Pete Laroca and Chick Corea and was from 1964 to 1965 a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. He worked on more than 130 albums, mostly with Sun Ra's band. Gilmore's playful ways to achieve impressive effects, making him even before the era of free jazz became a pioneer of the new sound in jazz.
