John Gormley

John Gormley (Irish Seán Ó Gormlaigh, * August 4, 1959 in Dublin) is an Irish politician and former party leader of the Green Party.

Biography

Gormley visited the St. Munchin 's College in Limerick, University College Dublin and the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg in Germany.

In 1991 he was elected to the Dublin City Council and was from 1994 to 1995 Lord Mayor of Dublin (Lord Mayor of Dublin). He was the first Green mayor of the city. June 1997 Gormley was first elected to the Dáil Éireann, where he remained until February 2011. After the 2007 elections his party and the related participation in government, he was Minister in the cabinet of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern as Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government. The following month, Gormley was elected the new party leader of his party; the previous party leader Trevor Sargent resigned on 13 June 2007.

In January 2011, the Green Party left the government coalition. Gormely occurred as a result back from his ministerial post. In the elections to Dáil Éireann in the next 31 months he could not defend his seat and retired from the Dáil from. As chairman of the Green Party he was end of May 2011 Eamon Ryan followed after.

Gormley is married and has two children.
