John Grün

Jean ( "John" ) Green ( born August 27, 1868 in Bad Mondorf, † November 3, 1912 in Ettelbrück ) was a Luxembourgian strongman. He was better known under the name Herkul Green and was considered the strongest man in the world.

Biography

Jean Green was born in 1868 as son of John Green and Anna Schneider in an old-established family of craftsmen from Bad Mondorf.

1889, at the age of 21, he emigrated to America, where he, a professional athlete and force people met Alexander Marx. Marx recognized greens talent and teamed up with him, so they called 'The Two Marks' in America went on tour together. 1892, was as green as the strongest man in the world already, he went back to his home country Luxembourg to there show off his powers. Later he teamed up with the Belgian athlete Miss Fanny, until he finally appeared alone as John or Herkul green.

On the Schober Fair in 1897, where he appeared in " Grand Théâtre Fernando " was John Green, a major attraction. In 1898 he succeeded to the Schueberfouer a carousel with 11 people to keep it in the air for a few minutes in balance.

In his public appearances he bent nails with his fingers, let horseshoe only muscle power to fly to pieces, or stones could be bruised on the chest with a big hammer. One of his most famous numbers is shown in the monument, which was erected in his honor in Bad Mondorf: In an ornament you can see how green stands on a platform and raises two horses with adult riders into the air from above with the help of ropes.

Having had finally left him the forces green led for a time a hotel in London. After a stroke, he died in a mental hospital by Ettelbrück. He was buried in his home village of Bad Mondorf.
