John Guise

Sir John Douglas Guise GCMG, KBE ( born August 29, 1914 in Gedulalara, Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea; † 7 February 1991) was a politician of New Guinea papua.

Biography

John Guise was an early proponent of the sovereignty of Papua New Guinea during the 1950s and was an employee of the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs ( Department of Native Affairs ). After he was a member of the Legislative Council of East Papua 1961-1963, he ( House of Assembly ) in 1964 elected a deputy of the meeting house, the speaker (Speaker ), he was from 1968 to 1972. Subsequently, he was from 1972 to 1975 Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of the Interior. He was Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE ), and then appointed on 6 June 1975 by Queen Elizabeth II to Knight Commander in 1972. On September 16, 1975, he was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George.

After the independence of Papua New Guinea on 16 September 1975, he was on the same day the first Governor-General. Him the Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George also was awarded on 16 September 1975. After only one and a half years in office he resigned on March 1, 1977 back to then to stand in the elections for the post of prime minister, but was defeated by incumbent Michael Somare.

Nevertheless, he remained politically active in the following years, and saw himself as a spokesman for the disaffected with the government Somare population. After his death, the John Guise Stadium was named after him.
