John H. Bankhead

John Hollis Bankhead (* September 13, 1842 in Moscow, Lamar County, Alabama, † March 1, 1920 in Washington DC) was an American businessman and politician (Democratic Party).

Career

John Hollis Bankhead attended community schools and later operating a plantation. During the Civil War he served in the Confederate Army, where he held the rank of Captain in the Alabama Infantry. Bankhead also pursued a political career. He was 1865-1867 and the years 1880 and 1881 Member of the House of Representatives from Alabama. In addition, he sat 1876-1877 in the Senate of Alabama.

Bankhead was 1881-1885 worked as a guard at the prison in Wetumpka. Last year he moved to Fayette (Alabama ), where he again ran a plantation. He then moved in 1912 to Jasper (Alabama ).

Bankhead was elected to the 50th U.S. Congress and reelected to the nine succeeding U.S. Congresses. He suffered in 1906 in the nomination for the 60th U.S. Congress defeat. Bankhead belonged to the U.S. House of Representatives March 4, 1887 to March 3, 1907. During this time, he had presided over the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds ( 52nd and 53rd U.S. Congress ). He was also a 1907 member of the Inland Waterways Commission.

Bankhead was appointed to the U.S. Senate, and subsequently elected, there to fill the vacancy that was created by the death of John T. Morgan. He was reelected in 1912 and 1918. Bankhead served there on 18 June 1907 until his death in 1920 in Washington. During this time, he had presided over the Committee on Standards, Weights, and Measures ( 62nd Congress ), Committee on Post Office and Post Roads ( 63 to 65 U.S. Congress ) and the Committee on Expenditures in the U.S. Ministry of Interior ( 66th Congress ). He was buried at Oak Hill Cemetery in Jasper.

Family

John Hollis Bankhead was the father of U.S. Senator John H. Bankhead II and U.S. Representative William B. Bankhead. He was also the grandfather of U.S. Representative Walter W. Bankhead.
