John H. Lewis

John Henry Lewis (* July 21, 1830 in Ithaca, New York, † January 6, 1929 in Knoxville, Illinois ) was an American politician. Between 1881 and 1883 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

In 1836 John Lewis came with his parents to Illinois, where the family settled on a farm in Fulton County. He attended the public schools of his new home. In 1847 he moved to Knox County, where he worked in agriculture. After a subsequent law degree in 1860 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he started working in Knoxville in this profession. From 1860 to 1864 he was employed by the administration at the District Court. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. In the years 1874 and 1875 he sat as an MP in the House of Representatives from Illinois.

In the congressional elections of 1880 Lewis was in the ninth constituency of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Thomas A. Boyd on March 4, 1881. Since he has not been confirmed in 1882, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1883. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives John Lewis practiced as a lawyer again. In 1900, he withdrew into retirement. He died on January 6, 1929 in Knoxville at the age of 98 years.
