John H. Morehead

John Henry Morehead ( born December 3, 1861 in Columbia, Marion County, Iowa, † May 30 1942 in St. Joseph, Missouri ) was a U.S. Representative (Democratic Party), and 1913-1917 of the 18th Governor of the State Nebraska.

Early years and political rise

Morehead attended the local schools of his home in Iowa. After he graduated from the Shenandoah Business College. In 1884 he moved to Nebraska, where he initially worked as a teacher and farmer. Later he also became merchants. Between 1896 and 1899 he was employed in Richardson County as treasurer. In 1900 he was mayor of Falls City. Between 1910 and 1912 he was a member and President of the Senate of Nebraska. After the death of the Lieutenant Governor, he also took over this office from 1911 until 1912. In November 1912 he was elected as a candidate of his party for Governor.

John Morehead took up his new post on January 9, 1913. After a re-election in 1914 he was able to officiate a total of four years. During his tenure, the national debt was reduced. At that time the first members of an only recently been decorated Control Commission of the state bodies have been appointed and adopted a new labor law. In 1916 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention, on the Woodrow Wilson was nominated for a second term as U.S. President.

After the end of his term Morehead remained politically active. He applied unsuccessfully in 1918 for a seat in the state Senate and was a candidate in 1920, also unsuccessfully for a renewed term as governor. For this he was then elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. There he was represented 1923-1935 in different committees. After the end of his time in Congress to Morehead devoted again to his private affairs. He was active in the real estate business and in agriculture. In 1940 he was again a delegate to the national convention of the Democrats, on the Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated for the third time for the presidency. Morehead died in May 1942. He was married to Minnie manner Reder, with whom he had two children.
