John Hanson Farquhar

John Hanson Farquhar ( born December 20 1818 in Union Bridge, Carroll County, Maryland, † October 1, 1873 in Indianapolis, Indiana ) was an American politician. Between 1865 and 1867 he represented the State of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

John Hanson attended the public schools of his home. In 1833 he moved with his parents to Richmond, Indiana. Until 1840 he worked as a machinist at a navigable canal. After a subsequent study of law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started working in Brookville in this profession. In the years 1842 and 1843 he was Clerk to the Senate of Indiana; In 1844 he was employed by the House of Representatives from Indiana. In 1852, Farquhar ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet.

During the Civil War John Farquhar captain was an infantry unit in the army of the Union. Politically, he joined the Republican Party. In the congressional elections of 1864 he was in the fourth electoral district of Indiana in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of William S. Holman on March 4, 1865. Since he resigned in 1866 to further candidacy, he was able to complete only one term in Congress until March 3, 1867. This was marked by the tensions between his party and President Andrew Johnson.

In 1870 he moved to Indianapolis, where he was active in the banking industry. He was then appointed by Governor Conrad Baker to Secretary of State of Indiana. John Farquhar died on October 1, 1873 in Indianapolis.
