John Hawkins (Canadian composer)

John Hawkins ( born July 26, 1944 in Montreal, † January 14, 2007 in Toronto ) was a Canadian composer and pianist.

Hawkins studied at the Conservatoire de musique du Québec piano with Lubka Kolessa to 1970 and composition at McGill University with István Anhalt. MItte 1960s he also visits the summer courses at Tanglewood, and in 1969 he participated in a workshop with conductor Pierre Boulez in Basel part.

As a pianist, Hawkins took part in concerts of the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec ( SMCQ ) in Montreal and was a founding member of the New Music Concerts in Toronto. With the SMCQ he took Jacques HETUS Cycle on. From 1970 to 2006 Hawkins taught at the University of Toronto music theory and analysis, composition and orchestration. For his composition Breaking Through, he was awarded the 1983 Jules Léger Prize for New Chamber Music.
