John Heenan (cardinal)

John Carmel Cardinal Heenan ( born January 26, 1905 in Ilford, England; † November 7, 1975 in London) was Archbishop of Westminster.

Life

John Carmel Heenan studied at Ushaw College in Durham and at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. In 1930 he received the Sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked for more than twenty years in the church ministry. From 1947 to 1951 he served as director of the Catholic Missionary Society.

1951 Pope Pius XII appointed him. Bishop of Leeds, 1957 to the Archbishop of Liverpool. John Carmel Heenan participated in the Second Vatican Council and in part was appointed in 1963 to the Archbishop of Westminster. On February 22, 1965, he was called by Pope Paul VI. taken as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Silvestro in Capite in the College of Cardinals. He died on 7 November 1975 in London and found his final resting place in the Cathedral of Westminster.
