John Herbert (athlete)

John Herbert ( John Alan Herbert Adolphus, born April 20, 1962 in Nottingham ) is a former British triple jumper who was active after his athletics career as a bobsledder.

In 1982, he was twelfth at the European Athletics Championships in Athens. At the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane, he was starting for England fourth in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

The following year he won the bronze medal at the Universiade in Edmonton and was eliminated at the World Athletics Championships 1983 in Helsinki in qualifying. In 1984, he was sixth at the European Indoor Championships in Gothenburg and tenth in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. In the Universiade 1985 in Kobe, he took another bronze.

In 1986 he celebrated his größeten international success with a victory at the Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. A fifth place finish at the 1988 European Indoor Championships in Budapest was followed by a preliminary round off at the Olympic Games in Seoul.

He was eighth at the World Indoor Championships in Budapest 1990 fourth at the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, eighth at the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow and finished ninth at the European Championships in Split 1989. In the World Cup 1991 in Tokyo he did not make it past the first round.

1988 and 1990 he was English Champion outdoors, 1995 in the hall. In 1982 he became British Champion in the long jump, triple jump in 1986.

In 1993 he moved to bobsledding. His greatest achievement in this discipline is the eighth place in the four-man event at the Olympic Games in 1994 in Lillehammer.

As a coach, he worked on the triple jumper Phillips Idowu and the long jumper Jade Johnson.
