John Hindmarsh

Sir John Hindmarsh, KH, RN ( May 22nd in 1785 in Kent, United Kingdom, † July 29, 1860 in London, United Kingdom) was a highly decorated Rear Admiral of the Royal Navy and the first governor of South Australia.

Military career

John Hindmarsh joined in 1793 at the age of 18 years in the Royal Navy and took in the following with the naval battle at the Glorious First 13, First naval battle of Algeciras in 1798 and participated in the Battle of the Nile, where he partly as the only officer on board HMS Bellerophon was able to avoid the sinking of the ship. In 1803 he was promoted to lieutenant. In addition, he served on HMS Phoebe during the Battle of Trafalgar, as well as in some other important naval battles. In 1830 he was given command of HMS Scylla and a year later, in 1831, he was appointed Rear Admiral.

Governor of South Australia

On December 28, 1836 Hindmarsh South Australia reached together with a fleet of the first British settlers. The proclamation of the new colony was on the same day and Hindmarsh was appointed as its first governor. Due to some disagreements with other representatives of the British Crown in South Australia Hindmarsh was recalled in 1838 after London. Two years later, in 1840, he became vice governor of Heligoland. From Queen Victoria, he was raised on 7 August 1851 in the knighthood.

Last years

In 1856 Hindmarsh retired to an estate in the seaside town of Hove. On July 29, 1860, he finally died at the age of 75 years in London.
