John Hollander

Biography

Hollander studied at Columbia University and Indiana University and was a 1954-1957 Junior Fellow of the Society of Fellows at Harvard University. After two years at Connecticut College, where he taught from 1959 at Yale University, most recently as Sterling Professor Emeritus. He was also a 1966-1977 Professor at Hunter College of the City University of New York.

His first book of poems A Crackling of Thorns was awarded the Yale Younger Poets Series of Award. In all, he published more than a dozen books of poetry. He also wrote several works of literary theory and published from publisher works of authors as varied as Ben Jonson and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Great recognition was published in 1994, his two-volume anthology American Poetry: The Nineteenth Century. With Robert Hass, Carolyn Kizer, Nathaniel Mackey, Marjorie Perloff, and he drew up the supplementary volume American Poetry: The Twentieth Century ( 2000).

Furthermore, Hollander also emerged as a children's book author and has worked with composers such as Milton Babbitt, George Perle and Hugo Weisgall. He was, inter alia, with the Bollingen Prize for poetry (1983, together with Anthony Hecht ), the Levinson Prize and the Shaughnessy Medal of the Modern Language Association and was a Fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
