John Hopkins Clarke

John Hopkins Clarke ( born April 1, 1789 in Elizabeth, New Jersey, † November 23, 1870 in Providence ) was an American politician of the Whig party from the state of Rhode Iceland.

A native of New Jersey Clarke moved early to Providence in Rhode Iceland, where he received his education from a private teacher. He graduated in 1809 from Brown University, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1812 and began as a lawyer working in Providence.

Professionally, John Hopkins Clarke worked in succession on various fields. He was initially in 1813 as Secretary ( Clerk ) employed by the Court of Providence County; to 1824, he served also as the owner of a distillery in Cranston. Then he ran cotton manufactories in Providence, Pontiac, and Woonsocket.

Politically, Clarke initially operated in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland, where he served from 1836 to 1842 and again from 1845 to 1847. In 1846 he was for the Whigs in the U.S. Senate, where he completed a full term of 4 March 1847 to 3 March 1853. Then he returned to the cotton business.
