John Horne

John Horne ( born January 1, 1848 in Campsie in Stirling, † May 30, 1928 ) was a Scottish geologist.

He attended the High School and the University of Glasgow.

In 1867 he became an assistant at the Geological Survey of Scotland under Benjamin Neeve Peach, whose close associate he was. He mapped the Midland Valley in Ayrshire. 1883-1897 he and Peach examined the geological structure of the North West Highlands to Cruachan. In 1888 he became a member of the Wollaston Fund of the Geological Society of London and in 1892 the Murchison Centenary Fund. 1901-1911 he was director of the Geological Survey of Scotland. He was also a member of the Royal Society in London and Edinburgh, which he was president from 1915 to 1919.
