John Howard (American actor)

John Howard ( born April 14, 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio as John R. Cox Jr., † February 19, 1995 in Santa Rosa, California ) was an American actor. In total he had around 115 film and television appearances 1934-1978.

Life and career

John Howard was a graduate of Case Western Reserve University in his hometown of Cleveland. He began his career as a stage actor in his native region, but in 1929 he was 16 years old his debut on Broadway in New York. His first films he made in 1934, after he had signed a contract with Paramount Pictures. Soon, Howard rose to become a popular film actor. He embodied, among others, Ronald Colman's brother in the drama In of Shangri -La and Katharine Hepburn's rich fiancé in the screwball comedy The night before the wedding. In addition to these roles in major films, he was the main actor in numerous, mostly cheaply made B- movies. He was frequently used in crime films, he played five times the role of the detective Bulldog Drummond in the late 1930s Jahfren.

For his service in World War II Howard got the Navy Cross and the French Croix de Guerre awarded. When he in 1947 after five years, however, again made ​​his first film, Howard was unable to repeat earlier successes, turning only small films. In the 1950s, Howard moved to roles on television while he barely made ​​films.
