John Howard (cyclist)

John Kennedy Howard ( born August 16, 1947 in Springfield ( Missouri)) is a former American professional cyclist, triathlete and Ironman World Champion (1981).

Career

John Howard was ten years in the U.S. National cycling team. He was in cycling four times U.S. champion in the road race (1968, 1972, 1973 and 1975) and in the years 1968, 1972 and 1976, he started three times for the United States in the Summer Olympics.

In 1981 he was on Hawaii Triathlon World Champion on the Ironman distance (3.86 km swim, 180.2 km cycling, 42.195 km running).

On July 20, 1985, he scored on a bicycle behind a vehicle with windscreen construction, a speed of 245 km / h ( 152.284 mph ), setting a new world record. This record was only ten years later in 1995 surpassed by Fred Rompelberg with 268.831 km / h.

Today John Howard lives in California and works as a coach. So he oversaw example, triathlete Paula Newby - Fraser and former speed skater Bonnie Blair U.S..
