John I, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg

John I of Nassau- Dillenburg (c. 1339; † September 4, 1416 in Herborn ) was 1350-1416 Count of Nassau - Dillenburg.

Life

Johann was the son of Adelheid of Vianden, which was abbess of the Premonstratensian pin Keppel as a widow, and of Count Otto II of Nassau- Dillenburg from the House of Nassau - Siegen, who died in 1351; Johann was so with just 11 years of Otto's successors. It is questionable whether he ruled independently or was under the guardianship regency of his mother. Speak the documents and files, in which Adelheid was raised in 1360 still as Mistress Nassau for the latter.

Johann was the founder of the Knight Alliance " society of the old courtly love " with which he is a following in the clashes with the Landgrave of Hessen to Itter and Driedorf created. In 1386 he acquired the county Diez. A lengthy feud with Count Johann von Katzenelenbogen for possession of the extinct line of Nassau- Hadamar older he finished 1408 with a solicited by the archbishop of Mainz in Boppard truce.

In 1392 he issued a new monastery for the Premonstratensian order - pin Keppel, the board his widowed mother as abbess; then noble daughters were only allowed to be recorded.

John reached for his time ripe old age of 77 years. He was by the early beginning of his term a total of 66 years of reigning Count, one of the longest tenures of a medieval ruler at all.

Today the school in Dillenburg is named as Johann von Nassau- school after him.

Marriage and issue

In 1357 he married Margarethe von der Mark. With her he had the following children:
