John I, Lord of Mecklenburg

John I, Lord of Mecklenburg, called the theologian; (C. 1211; † August 1, 1264 ) was from 1234 to 1264 prince of Mecklenburg rule.

Life

He was the eldest son of Henry II Borwin.

He managed to 1234 along with his brothers Mecklenburg. After the division of the state, he was awarded as the eldest son, the ancestral homeland of Mecklenburg. In 1227 he was able to free Mecklenburg through the Battle of Bornhöved by the Danish suzerainty. The country fell but soon under Saxon and Holstein feudal claims, which led to the war against Saxony -Lauenburg and looking castle -Holstein. He succeeded John I, by his brother Pribislaw I. compete with the diocese and county of Schwerin to win parts of the country Parchim Rich Mountain, including Sternberg. He promoted the Church and the German colonization of Mecklenburg. In 1262 he formed an alliance with the Guelphs against Denmark.

He was buried in Doberan.

Marriage and issue

John I was with Luitgart of Henneberg, daughter of Count Poppo VII of Henneberg, married. With her he had the following children:

  • Henry I (Mecklenburg ), called the Pilgrim
  • Albrecht I. (Mecklenburg), co-regent from 1264/1265
  • Hermann, canon to Schwerin
  • Elisabeth, married to Gerhard I. ( Holstein Itzehoe )
  • Nicholas III. , Canon in Lübeck, was co-regent from 1275-1283
  • Poppo, before 1264
  • John II, co-regent from 1264-1283
