Biography

Johann was born in the same year in which his father was killed in the Battle of Agincourt. As a younger son he received from his father no title and therefore was enfeoffed by his grandfather John I Duke of Berry with the county Etampes. After the death of John of Berry in 1416, the French king denied the award of the county and the transfer to John of Burgundy was delayed because of the process until the county was finally awarded in 1421 to Richard of Brittany. But Johann led his life the title of Count of Etampes.

As a young man John fought in the army of his cousin, the Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy in Picardy ( 1434 ), in Calais ( 1436 ), Luxembourg ( 1443 ) and Flanders ( 1453). However, he fell out with the son of Philip the Good, Charles the Bold and turned therefore to the French King Louis XI side. For this reason he was excluded in 1468 from the Order of the Golden Fleece, which he had held since 1456.

After his older brother, Charles of Burgundy, in 1464 the death, he inherited his possessions, since he was left without heirs. He was Count of Nevers and Rethel. In 1465 he supported King Louis XI. in the fight against the Ligue du Bien public, and thus turned against his relatives, Charles the Bold. 1472 he inherited from his uncle Charles of Artois, the county Eu, which he wanted to sell in 1477 shortly before his death to Charles the Bold. However, the death of the Duke prevented the transaction.

As heiress of Nevers and Eu sat Johann first his daughter from his first marriage, Elisabeth of Burgundy, one, however, since she died before him, inherited after his death her son, Engelbert of Cleves, the counties of Nevers and Eu 1491st The county of Rethel went to Charlotte of Burgundy, the daughter from his second marriage.
