John II, Duke of Brabant

John II the peaceable (* September 27, 1275, † October 27, 1312 in Tervuren ) was Duke of Brabant and Limburg 1294-1312 He was the son of Duke John I. and Margaret of Flanders..

In 1277 he became engaged to Margaret Plantagenet, the seventh daughter of King Edward I., whom he married when he was 20 years old. He succeeded his father in 1294 as Duke, and was faced with rebellions, which it was with the help of his uncle Gottfried von Aerschot Lord. He allied himself with the King of England, Guy of Flanders and other noblemen against Philip IV of France, however, the attack was delayed until the alliance broke up in 1300 itself. Later he fought against King Albrecht of Habsburg, who wanted to restore his authority in the region, and finally had to submit. In 1303, he fought against John II of Holland to expand its territory in the direction of the Scheldt estuary, but failed again.

On his deathbed, he signed the Charter of Kortenberg who got the status of constitutional Brabant.

Progeny

He married on July 9, 1290 in Westminster Abbey, Margaret of England ( 1275-1333 ), daughter of King Edward I and Eleanor of Castile. Their child was John III. (1300-1355), Duke of Brabant and Limburg.
