John III of Rietberg

Johann III. from the house Cirksenas (* 1566 in Aurich, † January 23, 1625 in Rietberg ) was the younger brother of Count Enno III. of Ostfriesland. He founded the Catholic side line of Cirksenas in the Westphalian county of Rietberg, the so-called house Ostfriesland.

Johann married 1601 Sabina Catharina, the daughter of his brother Enno. This was the heritage of the county Rietberg been awarded in Berumer comparison that had come over her mother Walburg von Rietberg together with the Harlingerland to the Cirksenas family. Johann had returned early to the Catholic faith. The marriage between close relatives was held ( dispensation ) to papal permission.

Together with his wife he had become a Catholic in 1601 also made ​​the Reformation in the County of Rietberg undo. Due to its Catholic denomination him now the floodgates for a career in the imperial service were open. So he became an officer in the Imperial and Spanish services. Even conquered Johann for the Bishop of Paderborn in 1604 whose Protestant Episcopal city back and was there not innocent of atrocities against the population.

The fact that John was not only converts for political reasons, was the foundation of a Franciscan monastery in Rietberg. After the death of his wife in childbirth giving birth to her eleventh child in 1618 Johann ruled the county of Rietberg until his own death in 1625.
