John Joubert (composer)

John Pierre Herman Joubert ( born March 20, 1927 in Cape Town ) is a British composer of South African origin.

Joubert had first music lessons from his mother, who himself had been a student of piano Harriet Cohen. Already during his school years, he created his first compositions and he received private lessons in composition from William Henry Bell, a student of Frederick Corder.

In 1946 he won the composition prize of the Performing Right Society and a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London. Here Theodore Holland, Howard Ferguson and Alan Bush were his teachers. From 1950 to 1962 he was a lecturer in music at the University of Hull.

Since 1962 he has taught at the University of Birmingham. In 1979 he was appointed Visiting Professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand. The Durham University ( 1991) and the University of Birmingham (2007) awarded him honorary doctorates. In 1986, Joubert retired from teaching in order to gain more time for composition.

2007, his birthday was celebrated with a " Joubertiade ", in the course of which took place the first performances of his opera Jane Eyre and the oratorio Wings of Faith. 2010 he has been Composer in Residence of the Three Choirs Festival, for which he composed An English Requiem.

He composed operas and ballets, Singonien and other orchestral works, concertos, church music and choral works, piano pieces and chamber music.
