John Kinsella (swimmer)

John Pitann Kinsella ( born August 26, 1952 in Oak Park, Illinois, USA ) is a retired American swimmer.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, he won as a 16- year-old silver medal in the 1500 m freestyle. In 1970, he swam world record in this discipline.

1972 in Munich, he won a gold medal with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay the United States. After that Kinsella specialized professional on long-distance swimming.

He was the first man who swam the 1500m freestyle event under 16 minutes.

John Kinsella et al trained at Indiana University under coach James Counsilman and won six NCAA titles during this time.

He was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1986.
