John Krol

John Joseph Cardinal Krol ( born October 26, 1910 in Cleveland, Ohio, USA; † 3 March 1996 in Philadelphia ) was Archbishop of Philadelphia.

Life

John Joseph Krol studied in Cleveland, Rome and Washington, the subjects philosophy and Catholic theology. He received on 20 February 1937 the Bishop of Cleveland, Joseph Schrembs, the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked for a year as a parish pastor. After further study, he became in 1942 professor at the Seminary of Cleveland in years. From 1943 to 1951 he worked as a Vice-Chancellor, from 1951 to 1954 as Chancellor of the Diocese of Cleveland.

On July 11, 1953, he was named by Pope Pius XII. Titular Bishop of Cadi and Auxiliary Bishop of Cleveland. He received his episcopal consecration of the Apostolic Delegate in the United States, Archbishop Giovanni Cicognani Amleto, on 2 September of the same year. Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Cleveland, Archbishop Edward Francis Hoban, and Auxiliary Bishop Floyd Lawrence Begin from Cleveland.

In 1954, John Joseph Krol Vicar General. On February 11, 1961, he was named by Pope John XXIII. Archbishop of Philadelphia, the inauguration took place on 22 March of the same year.

Krol attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as part of a Council Father.

Pope Paul VI. took him on 26 June 1967 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria della Mercede e Sant'Adriano a Villa Albani on the College of Cardinals. In the years 1971 to 1974 John Joseph Krol served as president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops of the United States. The management of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia in 1988 he laid for reasons of age. John Joseph Krol died on 3 March 1996 in Philadelphia and was buried in the local cathedral.
